Mr. Darek, you have been working in Melaco for almost 20 years. What kept you in Melaco for so long?
First of all, I am a person who doesn’t like change and gets attached to places and people very quickly. At Melaco I have the opportunity to do what I enjoy, so I never felt the need to look for another job or another employer.
What is your job?
At the moment I operate two machines in the plant – the RP30 and the CS. I like the latter the most, but both require a great deal of precision and care when it comes to setting them up and preparing them for work, as well as handling them during the process. You have to work hard with both machines.
Privately, are you also a person who pays attention to details?
Yes, I am. For many years my passion has been gliding and modeling. Therefore, such precise work has always accompanied me and still gives me great pleasure. I thought that it would change with age, that I would get bored, but this hobby is with me all the time.
Do you have your own workshop at home?
Yes, I have my own workshop. It all started with carpentry, which I was working on years ago. I have always liked carving in wood and this is how my passion was born. Gliders are made of wood, plywood or other natural materials, so they are very delicate and require meticulous work. In Melaco, I have similar tasks, also requiring concentration and accuracy, so in my case my hobbies are combined with work.
What skills do you need to work in a Melaco plant?
Accuracy above all. Accuracy and patience. Without patience, the simplest tasks will be difficult, then it is easy to get angry or irritated. Of course, knowledge is also important – you have to know what you are doing. I think you have to like it too.
After 19 years, you already know the machines on which you work very well. Were they terrifying at first? Did it take long to learn how to use them?
No, the devices did not scare me. Learning to use them has never been a problem. However, it’s good to remember that everyone has certain predispositions and will not fit everywhere. I tried to avoid those machines or technologies that were not for me. There are things we are good at and some that are better left to others.
What is the recipe for keeping an employee for more than 20 years?
I would not like to talk about it out loud (laughs). Seriously, there are many people who are surprised when I talk about my seniority. This may seem unusual these days, but it’s normal to me. As I said, I get used to places very quickly and I like my job. I do what I like, with no bigger issues. These are the most important issues for me.
Thank you for the interview.
